Our Army At War #16 - Page #15

Our Army At War #16 - Page #15 printed page

Our Army at War #16 (DC Comics, November 1953), Page #15 (Atom-Age)

Page #15 is actually page #5 of the 6-page story “Battle of the Bugles”. This “semi-splash” action page depicts U.S. Calvary Bugler Dave Pickett, shown full-figure in panel one, “sounding the charge” while bullets ricochet at his feet. In panel four, our hero takes a bullet to the arm. Beginning in September 1953 with stories in each All-American Men of War #6, Our Army at War #14, and Star-Spangled War Stories #13, Ross Andru and Mike Esposito began a long career as one of DC Comics’ primary war story artists, alongside the likes of Joe Kubert, Russ Heath, and Jerry Grandenetti. During the 1950’s and early 1960’s the team worked on DC’s war comics; All-American Men of War (1953–1964), GI Combat (1957), Our Army At War (1953), Our Fighting Forces (1955) and Star-Spangled War Stories (1954–1966). A very nice RARE example of “Atom-Age Large-Art” and some of the earliest DC Comics work available from the prolific art team of Ross Andru (pencils) and Mike Esposito (inks).
